ASU ANDAAZ
ASU Andaaz is Arizona State University’s nationally competitive Bollywood fusion dance team. The team competes across the nation against other universities during the academic year. Being a dancer on Andaaz allowed me to showcase my passion for dance and South Asian culture. Our eight-minute routine filled with costume changes props incorporated various styles including Bollywood, Bhangra, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, and Bharatnatyam among others. Andaaz is also a team that is affiliated with Desi Dance Network, Inc.
I finished my fourth year as a dancer on Andaaz in May 2018 and served as an elected captain for two years. As a captain, it was my responsibility to oversee all of the logistical and financial details, the production and choreography for the team. These tasks ranged anywhere from applying to competitions to budgeting our expenses and getting the necessary materials needed to put on a show. From a performance perspective, as a captain, I had to ensure that the team had a dynamic piece that complemented the dancers' strengths. This position greatly sharpened skills I now use professionally and played a large role in shaping me into a leader.
Being captain was a great opportunity for me because I was not only able to be creative on stage, but online too. I created the first official logo for the team used nationally, and also created the official introduction video for Andaaz 2017 and 2018. Our "intro video" is meant to provide context of the performance's theme.

Additionally, I maintained our Facebook and Instagram accounts to give our community, fans and family a first-hand look into our season. With a background in digital media, I knew that was the type of content that would resonate best with our audience.

While being a member of this team has thoroughly developed my professional skills that cannot be learned in a classroom, being on this team also gave me the opportunity to keep up with my love for dancing on stage. After really emphasizing the idea of teamwork and family during my final year of college, I am excited to take a step back and watch the team flourish on its own. I've had the chance to empower new leaders and encourage them ot create their own version of Andaaz. That feeling is priceless! The memories that I have created with my Andaaz family are ones that I get to keep for a lifetime.
